Advantages of moving to rented property before buying

  • Some people sell their home, move to rented accommodation for short time, and then buy a property.
  • When selling, this allows you to market your property as "chain free".
  • You can also accept a wider range of buyers (e.g. someone with an unsold house).
  • You can afford to wait a while if you don't get any offers you are happy with.
  • If house prices are falling, you may save money.
  • When buying, your offer will be more attractive as you will be "chain free"
  • If the house you buy needs building or decorative work, you can complete on the purchase but delay moving in until the work is complete.
  • If you are planning to move to an unfamiliar area, renting will give you time to assess the area before you commit to buying.
