How to deal with estate agents when buying a property

  • Don’t give them sensitive information.
  • Make out you have all the time in the world.
  • Keep in contact with agents, give them your mobile number and keep it switched on.
  • Be nice to them.
  • If an agent says your bid has been beaten by a higher one, ask for written evidence (could also ask seller) (some agents use false bids to increase price).
  • Some agents will provide false information about property (e.g. ownership history).
  • Some agents will push their own mortgage and insurance.
  • Some agents will take you to rubbish overpriced property and then show you the one they want to sell - make sure you go to only the flats you want to see.
