Tips on buying carpet

  • Always take a sample home.
  • Woven is better than tufted, but most carpets are tufted.
  • Wool is the best, but quality of wool varies - get carpet with Woolmark guarantee.
  • Wool is easy to clean, flame resistant and retains colour.
  • Avoid polypropylene - flammable.
  • Underlay improves feel, look, lifespan, heat and sound insulation.
  • Retailer should be registered with Carpet Foundation if possible.
  • For fitting, agree price for (i) clearing room; (ii) remove old flooring; (iii) secure all floorboards / chipboard sheets by removing nails and replacing with quality exterior grade screws; (iv) fitting underlay and carpet.
